The four pillars

How functional training
builds better athletes.

Train all four pillars together and the gains compound. A stronger squat protects your knees on a ski run. A cleaner row holds your HYROX pace. Better mobility lets you train for another twenty years.

Strength that transfers

Squat, hinge, press, pull, carry, and Olympic lift, coached as skills. The output is a body that moves heavy things safely on race day, at work, and at home.

Engines that recover

Rowing, running, biking, and mixed-modal conditioning, programmed in pacing zones. You build the engine that lets you go hard again sooner, the hallmark of a real athlete.

Skills that compound

Gymnastics, kettlebell flow, and Olympic lifting mechanics. Skill work is where average lifters become technicians and average runners become efficient.

Capacity that lasts

Mobility, recovery, and longevity protocols woven into weekly programming. Our Living Legends prove it: strength and athleticism are not optional after 50, they are the goal.

Your first 90 days

From first class to athletic identity.

Week 1

3 free classes

Coach-led intro sessions. You see the room, meet the people, and try a real workout scaled to where you are right now.

Week 2-3

5-Day Foundations

We coach the eleven foundational movements (squat, press, deadlift and barbell variations) the right way once, so every class after lands cleanly.

Month 2

Pick your lane

CrossFit for general athletic capacity, HYROX for race format, Olympic lifting for the barbell, rowing or Cardio Club for the engine. Most members blend two or three.

Month 3+

Track and progress

Lift logs, HYROX splits, gymnastics skill tiers, DEXA baselines. Real numbers proving the work is paying off, with a coach reviewing them.

The full stack

One system. Six specialties.

Every member moves through some mix of CrossFit, Olympic lifting, rowing, gymnastics, HYROX, and mobility. Coaches help you weight the mix to match your goal. New to the barbell? Start with our guide on why deadlifts are the most functional lift you'll learn.

Honest questions

Functional athletics, answered.

What is functional fitness, exactly?+

Functional fitness trains the movements your body actually does: squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, carrying, sprinting, and bracing. Done well, it transfers directly to sport, work, and daily life. At CrossFit BC we coach it through CrossFit, Olympic lifting, gymnastics, rowing, and running, all under one roof.

Why does functional training make me a better athlete?+

Most sports demand a blend of strength, power, endurance, balance, coordination, and recovery between efforts. Functional training builds all of them at once, with measurable benchmarks. A stronger squat helps your skier, a cleaner row helps your HYROX racer, better hinge mechanics help your golfer hit longer drives.

Is this just CrossFit with a different name?+

CrossFit is the core engine, but Functional Athletics is broader. It is the umbrella for how we coach barbell technique, gymnastics skills, rowing splits, run mechanics, and mobility, plus the metrics we use to know it is working. You can stay in CrossFit classes or specialize, the operating system is the same.

Who is functional athletics training for?+

Anyone with a body and a goal. Members in their twenties chase competition, runners and skiers use it as off-season strength, parents want to keep up with their kids, and our Living Legends 60+ use it to add healthy decades. Every workout scales to the athlete in front of the coach.

Where can I do functional fitness in Vancouver?+

CrossFit BC at 278 East 1st Avenue in Olympic Village, a few blocks from Main Street SkyTrain. We run CrossFit, HYROX, Olympic lifting, gymnastics, rowing, mobility, Cardio Club and Living Legends for adults 60+, all coached, seven days a week.

How do I start?+

Most people start with three free classes, then move into our 5-day Foundations course to learn the eleven foundational movements safely. From there you choose your lane: general CrossFit, HYROX racing, lifting, or our Hybrid PT memberships if you want one-on-one work woven in.
