Why strength matters more after 60

Four numbers worth knowing.

3 to 8%

After 30, we lose up to 3 to 8% of our muscle every decade, and the rate speeds up after 60. It has a name: sarcopenia.

Source: Volpi et al., Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care, 2004

16%

In 140,000 adults across 17 countries, every 5 kg drop in grip strength was linked to a 16% higher risk of early death.

Source: Leong et al., The Lancet, 2015

10 to 17%

Just 30 to 60 minutes of strength work a week was linked to a 10 to 17% lower risk of early death, heart disease and cancer.

Source: Momma et al., British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2022

174%

Adults aged 86 to 96 nearly tripled their strength (up 174%) in just 8 weeks of coached training. It is never too late.

Up to 1 in 3 Canadians over 65 fall each year. Stronger legs and better balance change that.

"I am a 71 year old active senior who decided to do HYROX and so needed some training. I eventually found CrossFit BC and I can honestly say it has been an outstanding experience. I have been working with Dia and attending 3 sessions per week. All the staff are unbelievably knowledgeable and encouraging. One of the many things that stands out for me is the community and the vibe. CrossFit BC seems to attract the nicest people. Give it a try, you will not be disappointed."

"I have attended a handful of classes and have noticed a significant improvement in my strength and endurance. All the coaches are great, they provide positive feedback and adjust exercises for you if you are recovering from an injury. I really appreciate the extended hours as well to accommodate peoples’ varying work schedules. Overall, a very friendly gym environment."

"CrossFit BC has improved the quality of my life quite significantly. From mental health to physical health, the community, the workout routines and everything in between. I’m so proud to be a CrossFit BC member and know that my life is better because of it. It’s also a fantastic place for anyone wanting to stay fit and healthy while pregnant or postpartum."

"I came to a "try it out" class at CFBC a year ago. As an unfit 60 year old woman, I was hesitant and worried about fitting in. From that very first day, the coaches and other members were extremely welcoming and encouraging, never judging. I'm now a regular, usually 5 days a week, sweating and laughing with other members through the wide variety of workouts. The constant variation in the workouts keeps it fresh every time. I feel fit and strong, and always supported. The CFBC members are a true community, widely diverse and generous with their support for each other. CFBC truly and sincerely has a place for every body and everybody. I'd encourage anyone, young or old, already fit or not, to "try it out". You'll be glad you did!!"
