Functional Fitness in Vancouver: What It Actually Means (and Why It Matters More Than You Think)
This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.
Functional fitness is training that improves how your body moves in real life -- not just in the gym. It focuses on compound movements like squats, deadlifts, pulling, pushing, and carrying that transfer directly to everyday activities like picking up your kids, carrying groceries, or climbing stairs.
CrossFit is one form of functional fitness, but not all functional fitness is CrossFit. CrossFit combines functional movements with high intensity and constant variation. Other functional fitness programs may focus on bodyweight training, kettlebells, or movement quality without the competitive element.
Absolutely. Functional fitness is scaled to your current ability. At CrossFit BC, every movement is taught progressively, starting with bodyweight and building from there. Our Foundations program is specifically designed for people who are brand new.
