Coaching Style

How Sarah coaches

Warm, encouraging, and living proof that you can become strong and fit at any age. Sarah knows firsthand how intimidating it can feel to walk into a gym, especially as an older adult who has never lifted weights. She strives to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable at whatever level of fitness they begin with.

Outside the Gym

When Sarah isn't coaching

Sarah ran a refugee camp for children in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1984-1985. She lived in India running an orphanage for abandoned babies for 3 years and returned almost every year for nearly 30 years. She was in New York City on September 11, 2001, where her team of emergency nurses, physicians, and paramedics set up an outdoor clinic at the site of the Twin Towers hours after the collapse. She is also on staff at the Academy for Dog Trainers, a two-year program training professional dog trainers from around the world.

The Honest Version

What Sarah got wrong, and how Sarah coaches now

What I used to get wrong

"I started CrossFit at 54 after losing serious muscle to illness, and the first few classes I tried to keep up with everyone else. It was the wrong target, and it nearly turned me away."

How I coach now

In Living Legends I coach against the comparison instinct. Your scale is your scale, your range is your range, and the only number that matters is whether you came back next week.

Every CFBC coach answers this question. It's part of how we coach.
