CrossFit FAQs

What people ask before their first CrossFit class, answered straight by the coaches who run them.

I'm nervous I'll be the slowest person in the room.

You won't be alone in that feeling. Most of our members felt exactly the same way before their first class. The truth is, nobody is watching you. Everyone's focused on their own workout. And even if you are the newest person there, every single member started where you are.

I've seen CrossFit videos online and it looks intense and dangerous.

Those videos don't represent what real CrossFit coaching looks like. At CrossFit BC, every class is led by a qualified coach who teaches progressions, corrects form, and scales movements. We prioritise how you move over how much you lift. Injuries happen when people train without coaching. We don't let that happen.

Do I need to be fit to start CrossFit?

No. That's literally why you're here. CrossFit scales to any fitness level. Your coach adjusts the weight, the reps, and the movements so you get the right challenge for where you are today. Not where someone else is.

What if I've never lifted a barbell?

You'll learn. Our Foundations course teaches every movement before you join group classes, and our coaches are with you every step of the way. Foundations is $297 on its own, and it is included at no charge when you join on the annual plan. Nobody is expected to know anything on day one.

Will I get injured?

Our coaches prioritise movement quality over everything. Every workout is scaled to your ability, every movement is taught with progressions, and we do a full assessment before you start. CrossFit done right, with real coaching, is one of the safest ways to train.

What if I have an injury or something that hurts?

Tell your coach at the whiteboard. Working around a sore shoulder or a dodgy knee is routine, and it happens in every class we run.

Am I too old for CrossFit?

Our classes run from people in their twenties to people well past sixty, in the same room, doing the same session at different loads. We also run a dedicated older adult program if you would prefer to start there.

I've tried gyms before and always quit. Why would this be different?

Because this isn't a gym where you swipe a card and figure it out alone. You get real coaching, real programming, and a community that notices when you're not there. That accountability is what makes people stay.

Is this one of those aggressive, competitive gyms?

We're intense about coaching, not about making you feel bad. Some of our members compete. But the vast majority are everyday people who want to feel stronger and healthier. The vibe is supportive, not intimidating.

How long is a CrossFit class?

Sixty minutes, including the coached warm up, a strength or skill piece, the workout itself, and a cool down.

How big are your classes?

Around 12 people on average. Weekday midday classes are often 5 or 6. Saturday mornings are our largest at close to 20.

How many days a week should I train?

Most members start with 3 days per week and build from there. Your coach can help you find the right frequency for your goals and recovery.

What's the difference between CrossFit and HYROX?

CrossFit builds broad fitness through varied workouts. HYROX is a specific race format with defined events. Many of our members do both. If you're not sure which is for you, come try 3 classes free and we'll help you figure it out.

How much does it cost?

Your first three classes are free. After that, unlimited CrossFit is $199 a month on a 12-month plan, or $297 month to month. Training 3 times a week on a 3-month plan is $529 paid in full, or $199 a month. Drop-ins are $30. The Foundations course is $297 on its own, and it is included at no charge when you join on the annual plan.

Is CrossFit BC the closest CrossFit gym to downtown Vancouver?

Yes. We're at 278 East 1st Avenue in Olympic Village, one Canada Line stop from Yaletown-Roundhouse and two from Vancouver City Centre. Most downtown members are at the gym in 10 to 15 minutes door-to-door, around 5 minutes by bike across the Cambie Bridge from Yaletown or the south end of Gastown. We open at 5:30 AM weekdays so you can train, shower in our full change-rooms, and be at your downtown desk by 8.

Ready to get started?

Classes run seven days a week and every workout scales to you. Your first three classes are free, with no application.
