Vancouver lifter's guide

Olympic Lifting vs CrossFit. Which one for you?

Olympic weightlifting is a sport built around two lifts done as well as a human can do them. CrossFit is constantly varied strength + conditioning. The two overlap, but each serves a different goal. Here's how to choose, and how to do both.

Here's the TL;DR

Olympic Weightlifting is the snatch and the clean & jerk, plus the strength work that supports them. Deep skill, deep focus, big PRs. CrossFit uses the Oly lifts as part of a much broader programme (gymnastics, conditioning, varied benchmarks). Pick Oly if you love technical mastery of one sport. Pick CrossFit if you want broad capacity. Train both if you want the best of each.

Okay, but which is for me?

A few gut-check questions to help you decide.

Olympic Weightlifting might be for you if...

Specialty coaching for the snatch and clean & jerk, plus accessory strength. Deep technical work.

  • You love perfecting one or two technical lifts
  • You want a clear strength PR pathway (snatch, C&J, squat, pull)
  • You compete or want to compete in weightlifting
  • You like long, focused training sessions with one barbell
  • You want a coach who watches every rep on video

CrossFit might be for you if...

Constantly varied strength + conditioning with barbells, gymnastics, and benchmarks. Broad capacity.

  • You want strength AND conditioning, not one or the other
  • You like variety and being surprised by the workout
  • You want to build skills across many movements
  • You enjoy training with a class and shared workouts
  • You want fitness that holds up across sports and life

Why train at CrossFit BC

Olympic Village, Vancouver. Coaching since 2008. 40 CrossFit classes, 25+ HYROX classes, Olympic lifting, gymnastics, mobility and a Sunday Funday Cardio Club every week, all under one roof.

Both, programmed together

Our Life Performance membership covers CrossFit AND Olympic lifting specialty sessions, one gym, one coaching staff.

Coaches who lift

Our Oly coaches train the lifts themselves and have coached competitive weightlifters. Real eyes, not theory.

Proper equipment

Competition platforms, calibrated plates, jerk blocks, lifting shoes available. Built to lift heavy and lift safely.

Video review

We film and review your lifts so you can see what your coach sees. Your snatch improves faster when you can see it.

Foundations done right

Beginners learn the squat, deadlift, and press in Foundations before touching the snatch or clean. No shortcuts, no risk.

Friendly with CrossFit

Our programming protects your lifts from the conditioning, so you can chase PRs while still running, rowing, and training hybrid.

Frequently asked questions

Will CrossFit help my Olympic lifting?+
Yes, indirectly. CrossFit builds the conditioning, mobility, and accessory strength that supports the lifts. It will not replace specialty Oly programming if competition is your goal, you still need dedicated technical sessions with light bars and high focus. Best combo: Oly specialty 2-3x a week plus CrossFit 2-3x for everything else.
Will Olympic lifting help my CrossFit?+
A lot. The snatch, clean, and jerk show up constantly in CrossFit workouts. The better your technique, the more weight you move with less fatigue. Most members who add Oly specialty see their CrossFit lifts and workout times improve within a few months.
I've never touched a barbell, where do I start?+
Foundations. Five coached sessions teach the squat, hinge, press, pull, and Olympic lift entries (high pull, hang clean) with proper mechanics. Then you can join CrossFit classes, Oly specialty, or both, depending on what you want.
Do I need lifting shoes?+
Not at first. Foundations and early classes work in regular trainers. Once you start chasing real numbers on the snatch and clean, lifting shoes help with squat depth and ankle position. We can recommend models and have loaners to try.
Can I compete in weightlifting from CrossFit BC?+
Yes. We have coached members at local BC Weightlifting meets and online competitions. Talk to a coach about a goal meet and we'll build a focused training cycle around it.
How does this fit with HYROX or running?+
Cleanly. Oly is heavy and short, HYROX is long and grindy, running is aerobic. They can all live in one week with smart programming. Most of our hybrid athletes do one heavy Oly day, two HYROX classes, two CrossFit classes, and Sunday Funday Cardio Club. Coach will help you plan it.
What does it cost?+
Olympic lifting specialty is included in Life Performance ($259/month annual). CrossFit membership ($199/month annual) or The Engine Room HYROX membership ($497 paid in full or $189 every four weeks) cover the Oly that shows up in regular CrossFit classes. Drop-ins available for visitors.
