Vancouver runner's guide

HYROX vs Running Club. Which one for you?

HYROX or a Sunday running crew? Both build aerobic engine. They train very different bodies. Here's how to choose, and how our members layer both at CrossFit BC.

Here's the TL;DR

A running club is the simplest, most social way to build aerobic base. HYROX trains the same engine plus the strength to push a sled, throw a wall ball, and lunge with a sandbag. Many of our members do both: Sunday Funday Cardio Club for the miles and the crew, weekday HYROX classes for the strength and the race goal.

Okay, but which is for me?

A few gut-check questions to help you decide.

Running Club might be for you if...

Weekly social run, pace groups, a coffee at the end. Pure aerobic, very low barrier.

  • You love running and just want company on Sundays
  • You're training for a road race (5K, 10K, half, marathon)
  • You want a free, no-commitment way to stay consistent
  • You're new to the gym and want a soft on-ramp
  • You like flat, scenic Vancouver routes (seawall, False Creek, Olympic Village)

HYROX might be for you if...

A global race format: 8 x 1 km runs paired with 8 functional stations. Trains your full engine.

  • You want a race goal that isn't just running fast
  • You like measurable progress (split times, sled splits, wall-ball reps)
  • You want strength that transfers to running, hiking, skiing, life
  • You enjoy variety: SkiErg, rower, sled, sandbag, wall balls
  • You want a global race calendar (Vancouver, Toronto, Seattle, Vegas)

Frequently asked questions

Can I do both HYROX and Cardio Club at CrossFit BC?+
Yes. Most of our HYROX athletes also show up to Sunday Funday Cardio Club, the long social run is the perfect easy-day for HYROX training. Cardio Club is free. HYROX classes are covered by The Engine Room and Life Performance memberships.
I'm a runner with no gym background. Will HYROX wreck me?+
No, every movement scales. Most runners pick up the sled and SkiErg quickly because they already have the aerobic base. We start you with HYROX Foundations to dial in mechanics on the wall ball, lunge, and sandbag before you join the regular class. Runners often become some of the strongest finishers because they pace well.
Will HYROX make me a faster road runner?+
It will make you a more durable runner. The added strength protects you from common overuse injuries, posterior chain work improves your stride, and the SkiErg and sled work add aerobic capacity without the mileage. For pure marathon PRs you still need running-specific volume, which is why we encourage HYROX athletes to also show up to Cardio Club for the long easy run.
When and where is Sunday Funday Cardio Club?+
Every Sunday at 7:30am from the gym at 278 East 1st Avenue, Olympic Village. Routes rotate (seawall, False Creek, Mount Pleasant), pace groups for everyone from 5 min/km to walk-runners, and coffee after at a local cafe. It is free, members and non-members welcome.
Do I need to race HYROX to train HYROX?+
No. Plenty of our HYROX members never sign up for a race, they just love the training. The format is built for measurable progress, which is satisfying whether you race or not. When you are ready, we coach race-day strategy, pacing, and transitions.
Which one builds more general fitness?+
HYROX, by a meaningful margin. Running builds a great aerobic engine but does not train strength, grip, or upper-body work. HYROX includes all of it, in a format that progresses week over week. If you can only pick one program, HYROX gives more transferable fitness. If you can do both, you get the best of each.
What's the cost difference?+
Sunday Funday Cardio Club is free at CrossFit BC. The Engine Room is the only HYROX membership: $497 paid in full or $189 every four weeks for 12 weeks, Life Performance (all classes, including HYROX, CrossFit, lifting, and gymnastics) starts at $259/month annual. Drop-in HYROX classes are also available.
Do CrossFit BC members get early access to HYROX tickets?+
Yes. As an authorized HYROX Training Club, CrossFit BC gives active members early access to HYROX ticket pre-sales for races all over the world before they open to the public, from Vancouver and Toronto to races abroad. Active HYROX class-pack holders count as active members and qualify too. We send the pre-sale code the moment HYROX releases it, so members can lock in their city, division, and time slot before popular races sell out, then travel and race with a crew that trains together. Membership has its privileges.
