The Beginner's Guide to Starting CrossFit in Vancouver

This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.

Common questions

Do I need to be fit to start CrossFit?

No. You don't get fit to start CrossFit, you start CrossFit to get fit. Every movement is scaled to your ability by your coach. At CrossFit BC, beginners train alongside experienced athletes and every workout is adjusted in real time.

What happens at my first CrossFit class?

You'll be greeted by name, taken through a warm-up, introduced to the movements (all scaled to you), complete a coached workout, and cool down. The whole session is about 60 minutes. Bring workout clothes, water, and a towel. Arrive 10 minutes early so your coach can get to know you.

Is CrossFit dangerous for beginners?

Not when done with qualified coaching. At CrossFit BC, every new member is assessed, and coaches scale all workouts to your ability. CrossFit's injury rate is comparable to recreational running and lower than many popular sports when coached properly.
