Do I Need to Be Fit Before Joining CrossFit? (Honest Answer from Coaches)
This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.
No. CrossFit is designed to meet you where you are. Every movement is scaled to your ability, and coaches adjust workouts in real time. At CrossFit BC, beginners go through a Foundations program to learn movements safely before joining regular classes.
Scaling means adjusting the weight, movement, range of motion, or volume of a workout to match your current ability. For example, pull-ups become ring rows, heavy squats become air squats, and running can be swapped for rowing. Scaling is how every experienced CrossFit athlete started.
Week 1 is learning basics and experiencing soreness (which fades quickly). Week 2, movements feel more natural and confidence builds. Week 3, it becomes routine and you notice better sleep and energy. By week 4, you're lifting heavier, moving better, and feeling like you belong. Most people wish they'd started sooner.
