CrossFit vs HYROX: Which Should a Beginner Start With?
This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.
For most true beginners, CrossFit is the better starting point because it teaches the widest range of foundational movements with a coach watching every rep. If a HYROX race is what excites you, training for it directly also works well. Many people eventually do both.
CrossFit is constantly varied functional training across strength, gymnastics, and conditioning, run as a coached class. HYROX is a standardized fitness race of eight 1 km runs each paired with a functional station, so it is fixed, repeatable, and rewards running endurance.
No. HYROX is about half running, but coached training builds your running in manageable doses and scales the station loads to you. You do not need to be a runner or a competitor to start.
