Why We Use CrossFit (And Why It Still Matters)

Functional fitness, group classes, hybrid training, HYROX, the labels keep changing. The reason CrossFit still works hasn't.

We've been a CrossFit affiliate in Olympic Village, Vancouver since 2008. In that time we've watched bootcamps come and go, F45 open and saturate, functional fitness rebrand itself five times, and HYROX explode out of nowhere. Every few years somebody asks us, in good faith: why are you still calling yourselves a CrossFit gym?

This is the answer. It's not nostalgia. It's not loyalty. It's that the CrossFit method still does the job better than anything else we've tested, and we've tested almost all of them.

What "the job" actually is

The job is to make you broadly capable for the rest of your life. Strong enough to deadlift your kid, fast enough to chase a bus, conditioned enough to hike for hours, mobile enough to get off the floor at 70. Sport, work, life, all of it.

Most fitness modalities optimize for one thing. Bodybuilding optimizes for size. Powerlifting optimizes for three lifts. Running optimizes for running. Bootcamps optimize for sweat. None of those are the same as being broadly capable.

What CrossFit got right

Three things, mostly:

1. "Constantly varied, functional movements at high intensity"

That phrase has been on a million t-shirts but it still describes the work. Squat, hinge, push, pull, carry, run, row, jump, the movements humans actually do. Mixed up so the body never adapts to one stimulus and stalls. Done at an intensity that produces real change.

2. The class format

A coach who knows your name, a workout that's already programmed, scaling that meets you where you are, and a group of people doing it with you. That's a stupidly powerful combination, and it's why CrossFit gyms have retention numbers most boutique studios would kill for.

3. Open-source programming + hard data

CrossFit was the first major fitness method to publish its theory and benchmarks publicly. Fran. Cindy. Murph. Repeatable workouts you can re-test six months later and know, actually know, whether you got fitter. Most modalities can't tell you that.

What CrossFit got wrong (and how affiliates fix it)

Some of the criticism is fair. Early CrossFit had real problems with rep-quality versus speed, with under-coaching gymnastics, with athletes pushed past their capacity. The method evolved, and good affiliates evolved faster.

At CFBC, that means:

 • We coach scaling as the system, not the exception. The Rx weight isn't the goal, doing the workout the way it was meant to feel is.
 • Strength is the floor. We program 8–12 week strength blocks because nobody gets durably fit on metcons alone.
 • Aerobic base before alactic spice. Most people need more low-intensity work before they need more burpees.
 • Foundations is mandatory. Nobody walks into a class blind. See how Foundations works.

That's all in line with our coaching approach.

Why this still matters in 2026

HYROX is great. F45 is fine. Personal training works. They're all tools. But we still program from the CrossFit playbook because, after 18 years, we have not found a system that produces broadly capable, durable, lifelong athletes more reliably.

The proof is on our floor. We have members in their 50s and 60s out-deadlifting members in their 20s. We have brand-new athletes who've never touched a barbell hitting their first pull-up in 12 weeks. We have a community where people stay 5+ years because the training keeps working and the room keeps showing up.

That's the case for CrossFit. It's not flashy. It just works.

Want to see for yourself?

The fastest way to understand why CrossFit still matters is to do one class. Try 3 free classes or book a Foundations consult and we'll walk you through it ourselves. If you want to read more about the kind of community we've built around the method, see our community in Vancouver.

Common questions

Isn't CrossFit dangerous?

Done badly, like any sport, yes. Done with proper coaching, scaling, and programming, the injury rate is comparable to other recreational fitness activities. The big variable is the gym, not the method.

Why CrossFit instead of HYROX or hybrid training?

They're not in conflict. CrossFit is the broad base; HYROX and hybrid are specializations within it. We coach all three. Read our CrossFit vs HYROX comparison.

Do I need to be fit before starting CrossFit?

No. Every workout is scaled to your current capacity. Read do I need to be fit before CrossFit.

What's the best way to start at CrossFit BC?

Either book a free intro or jump straight into 3 free classes. Both are good entry points — the right one depends on whether you want to talk to a coach first or experience a class first.
