9 Essential CrossFit Movements Explained from CrossFit BC. Nine movements. That's the whole foundation. Master these and every CrossFit workout makes sense. Here's the breakdown.
The 9 Essential CrossFit Movements (And Why We Teach Them First)
This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.
The 9 foundational CrossFit movements are: Air Squat, Front Squat, Overhead Squat, Shoulder Press, Push Press, Push Jerk, Deadlift, Sumo Deadlift High Pull, and Medicine-Ball Clean. These movements form the basis of all CrossFit training.
These 9 movements cover the full range of fundamental human movement patterns: squatting, pressing, and pulling. They progress logically from simple to complex, and every other CrossFit movement is a variation or combination of these foundational patterns.
You need to demonstrate competence in all 9 movements through a Foundations course before joining regular classes. This ensures you can move safely and effectively. Our Foundations program at CrossFit BC covers all 9 movements in 3 or 5 one-on-one sessions with a senior coach.
The overhead squat is generally considered the most challenging of the 9 foundational movements because it demands mobility through the thoracic spine, shoulders, hips, and ankles simultaneously. It is also a key diagnostic tool that reveals limitations in flexibility and stability.
Our 3-Day Foundations program covers all 9 movements in three 60-minute sessions. Our 5-Day program provides additional depth with Olympic lifting and gymnastics. Most athletes achieve basic competence in 3 sessions, with continued refinement happening over months and years of training.
Yes. These 9 movements scale to any age and fitness level. The same squat pattern used by a competitive athlete is adapted for an older adult by adjusting depth, load, and speed. CrossFit BC offers a Living Legends program specifically for adults 50 and older.
