12-Week HYROX Race Prep Timeline for Vancouver Athletes

This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.

Common questions

Who is this 12-week HYROX timeline for?

It is built for first-time HYROX racers, returning racers, and CrossFit athletes who already have a fitness base. You can run 5K, you have lifted before, and you train at least 3 days a week. If you are brand new to fitness, start with our beginner HYROX training guide first and give yourself 6 months before your first race.

Can I compress the timeline if my race is sooner than 12 weeks?

If you have 8 to 10 weeks, you can shorten the aerobic base block but never skip it. Running on tired legs through 8 stations is what wrecks under-prepared athletes. With less than 8 weeks, focus on race-specific intensity and a proper taper. Below 6 weeks, our honest advice is to defer to the next race rather than risk injury or a brutal race-day experience.

What equipment do I need to follow this plan?

Ideally a HYROX-spec sled, SkiErg, sandbag (10kg and 20kg), wall ball, and rower. Most commercial gyms do not have these, which is why we built our HYROX program around them. If you are training elsewhere, find a HYROX-affiliated gym for at least one session per week. Sled work is non-negotiable.
