Which race is better for a complete beginner: HYROX or Deadly Dozen?

For most true beginners, HYROX is easier to prepare for because the format is published and you can rehearse every station. Deadly Dozen is also beginner-friendly, but you have to be comfortable with not knowing exactly what is coming. If you can finish a regular CrossFit class without modifications, you can finish either race.

Do I need to be a runner to do HYROX or Deadly Dozen?

No, but a basic running base helps. HYROX has roughly 8 km of flat running and rewards steady road pace. Deadly Dozen has 4 to 8 km on trails where pacing matters more than speed. Most athletes improve their running dramatically during a focused 8 to 12 week race prep block.

How long should I train before signing up for my first race?

If you are already training 3 to 4 times per week, 8 to 12 weeks of focused prep is plenty. If you are starting from scratch, give yourself 3 to 6 months to build a base first. Our 5-Day Foundations and 30-Day Lifestyle Reset are designed to get you to that base quickly.

Can I race HYROX and Deadly Dozen in the same year?

Yes, and many of our members do. A common pattern is HYROX in the winter months and Deadly Dozen in the summer. The training overlap is around 80 percent, so you are not starting from zero when you switch focus.

What equipment do I need to train for HYROX?

Sled, ski erg, rower, wall balls, sandbag, and farmers carry handles cover almost every HYROX station. Any well-equipped CrossFit gym in Vancouver, including CrossFit BC, has all of it. You do not need anything at home to prepare properly.
