What to Expect in Your First CrossFit Class in Vancouver (Step by Step)

This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.

Common questions

What happens at a first CrossFit class?

You'll be greeted by name, taken through a warm-up, learn the movements for the day (all scaled to your ability), complete a coached workout (typically 10-20 minutes), and cool down with stretching. The full session is about 60 minutes.

What should I wear to my first CrossFit class?

Comfortable athletic clothing (t-shirt, shorts or leggings) and athletic shoes. Flat-soled shoes like Converse or cross-trainers are ideal, but running shoes work fine. Bring a water bottle and towel. No special equipment is needed.

Will I be able to keep up in a CrossFit class as a beginner?

Yes. Every workout is scaled to your ability by your coach. You go at your own pace, and movements are modified in real time. Nobody expects you to keep up with experienced athletes on your first day.

How long is a CrossFit class?

A typical class is about 60 minutes: 10 minutes of warm-up, 15 minutes of skill or strength work, 10-20 minutes for the main workout, and 5 minutes of cool-down and stretching.

Do I need experience before trying CrossFit?

No experience is needed. At CrossFit BC, coaches explain every movement, demonstrate it, and then scale it to your level. The Foundations program is also available as a structured intro course for people who want to learn the basics before joining regular classes.

Is there a free trial at CrossFit BC?

Yes. CrossFit BC offers 3 free classes with no commitment. You can try the coaching, community, and programming before making any decisions. No sales pressure.
