The Hybrid Shift: Why Everyone Is Training Like an Athlete Now

This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.

Common questions

What is a hybrid athlete?

A hybrid athlete trains for two or more qualities that traditionally compete with each other, usually strength and endurance. Think someone who can deadlift twice their bodyweight and also run a respectable 10K. The point is not to be elite at one thing. It is to be capable across the whole spectrum of human performance.

Do I have to compete in HYROX or CrossFit to train this way?

No. Most hybrid trainers never enter a competition. They want a body that works in real life: that can ski a full day, hike with grandkids, lift heavy boxes, run for a flight, and recover quickly. Racing is one expression of hybrid fitness. Living well is another.

How is hybrid training different from CrossFit?

CrossFit is one of the original hybrid systems. Hybrid training as a broader category leans more on intentional strength blocks, more zone 2 cardio, and more sport-specific conditioning like sled work and running. CrossFit BC blends both: classic CrossFit on one side, HYROX-style conditioning on the other, and a coach helping you balance the two.
