Longevity Without Vitality Is a Goal Not Worth Pursuing (and Here's Why)

Lifespan is simply how long you live. Healthspan is the period spent in good health, free from chronic disease and significant disability. Healthspan is increasingly recognized as the more meaningful target in longevity research because living longer without quality of life is not a meaningful outcome.
Vitality is the measurable, felt experience of being alive and capable. It encompasses strength, mobility, energy, recovery capacity, capability, curiosity, purpose, joy, adaptability, and meaningful connection. It is what makes healthspan worth having, the difference between surviving and thriving.
A 2022 meta-analysis in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that muscle-strengthening activities were associated with a 10-17% lower risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. Resistance training preserves muscle mass, bone density, metabolic health, hormonal function, and functional independence as you age.
