Common questions

Is red meat actually linked to cancer?

The World Health Organization classified processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen and unprocessed red meat as Group 2A, meaning probably carcinogenic. Those groups describe the strength of the evidence, not the size of the risk. How much beef is reasonable?

Most guidance lands around three servings of unprocessed red meat per week, roughly 350 to 500 grams cooked in total, with processed meat kept occasional. That is a defensible target for an active person and leaves plenty of room for the protein sources that should also be in rotation.

Do athletes need red meat?

No, but it makes some things easier. Beef delivers heme iron, zinc, B12 and creatine in forms that are well absorbed, and iron status in particular is a common issue among menstruating endurance athletes. A well-built plant-based diet covers all of it with attention to supplementation. A carelessly built one does not.
