Hybrid Fitness Races Compared: HYROX, The Hybrid Games, Deadly Dozen, ATHX and LT Games
Last updated 18 October 2026. Facts checked 18 October 2026
Hybrid fitness races mix running (or another cardio machine) with strength and conditioning stations. HYROX is the biggest and races in Vancouver. The Hybrid Games cuts the runs to 600m and adds stations. Deadly Dozen uses twelve 400m runs and twelve stations. ATHX swaps the race for six timed zones over about 2.5 hours. LT Games lets you choose your own weights.
If you're wondering which one is right for you, this is the page. We coach hybrid athletes every week, and we've laid it all out side by side.

HYROX: the global standard
Every HYROX race is a 1 km run followed by a station, eight times over, always in the same order. That consistency is the whole point: it's what allows global leaderboards and a World Championship each season. 1 Divisions run from Open to Pro (heavier weights), plus Doubles and a four-person Relay. 1
It is also by far the biggest. HYROX was projected to draw 1.3 million participants across more than 100 events in its 2025/26 season, up from about 650,000 the season before. 2
Best for: anyone who wants a race they can repeat, compare and improve on, anywhere in the world. From Vancouver: HYROX Vancouver runs 17 to 20 December 2026.
The Hybrid Games: less running, more stations
A UK series launched in 2025. Ten 600m runs, ten stations (the HYROX eight plus an air bike and dumbbell snatches) and a 200m sprint finish. Solo and doubles only, with no elite division. 34
The organizer changed hands in March 2026 after the original operating company filed notice of intention to enter administration, and a Sunday race day was cancelled at short notice in April 2026. 5 Worth knowing if you're travelling for it.
Best for: first-timers who dread 8 km of running and want a social, low-pressure race. From Vancouver: UK only. Read our full Hybrid Games guide.
Deadly Dozen: twelve rounds, shortest runs
Deadly Dozen started on a running track in Macclesfield, England. The core race is 12 x 400m runs, which it calls Journeys, and 12 stations, called Labours. 6 The Labours are built around six movement patterns: hinge, squat, lunge, push, pull and carry. 7
You can race solo, in pairs, or as a relay team of four, and there's no time limit. 67 There are also gym-based versions, including a stations-only race and versions that swap the run for a rower, SkiErg or bike, plus a scaled Deadly Youth race for 12 to 15 year olds. 68
Best for: people who want the most strength-heavy, least run-heavy race, and gyms that want to host. From Vancouver: CrossFit BC is an affiliated Deadly Dozen gym and hosted a Deadly Fitness Test here on 3 October 2026.
ATHX: zones instead of a race
ATHX doesn't alternate runs and stations at all. It's a continuous, roughly 2.5-hour event split into six zones: warm-up (30 minutes), strength (20), refuel (10), endurance (30), recovery (30) and a MetCon X finale (30). 9
In the 2026 strength zone, pairs build a 1RM strict press, a 3RM back squat and a 5RM deadlift, scored on total weight lifted. In the endurance zone one partner runs while the other rows, swapping each time, with the run distance set by division: 500m for Lite, 750m for ATHX, 1 km for Pro. 9
ATHX was founded by coach Ollie Marchon and grew from five UK events in 2023 to a 14-event European tour in 2026. 10 It held its first event outside Europe in Miami Beach in March 2026, and lists Los Angeles semi-finals on 7 November and finals in Lisbon from 27 to 29 November 2026. 102
Best for: strong lifters who want strength to count as much as engine. From Vancouver: nearest events are in the US.
LT Games: you pick the weight
Life Time's LT Games runs 17 stations in a fixed order, but each athlete chooses their own weight-and-rep scheme at each one. A deadlift station, for example, asks men to accumulate 10,000 lb and women 7,500 lb, at whatever load suits them. 11 The April 2026 edition in Minneapolis was the second, with 130 competitors. 11
Best for: experienced athletes who like strategy as much as fitness. From Vancouver: one US event; watch for new dates.
Which one should you do?
- Your first race ever: HYROX Doubles or Relay. It's here in Vancouver, the format never changes, and splitting the work takes the fear out of it.
- You hate running: Deadly Dozen first, The Hybrid Games second.
- You're a lifter: ATHX, where your strength zone score really counts.
- You want to chase a number for years: HYROX solo Open, then Pro.
- You're over 50 and want in: start with a Relay or Pairs format and train for it with a coach. Every one of these races can be scaled through partner work.
*A coach's note from our floor:* the athletes who enjoy their first hybrid race most aren't the fittest ones. They're the ones who practised the transitions, knew every station before race day, and raced with a friend. Pick the format that gets you to the start line, not the one that looks hardest on Instagram.
