What is scaling in CrossFit?

Scaling means adjusting a workout's weight, reps, range of motion, or movement to match your current ability while keeping the intended stimulus. It is how a true beginner and an experienced athlete can train the same session safely and both get the right challenge.

A plain-language definition from the CrossFit BC glossary. We explain the term the way a coach would explain it mid-class, then show where it fits in an actual training week.

Common questions

Does scaling mean I am not doing the real workout?

No. Scaling keeps the intended stimulus while matching the work to your ability. A scaled workout is the right workout for you, and most members scale something on most days.

Who decides how I scale?

Your coach guides it, especially when you are new. As you gain experience you learn to self-scale based on how a workout is meant to feel.
