Why You Feel Tired All the Time (and How to Leave Energy-Saving Mode)

This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.

Common questions

How do I know if my tiredness is normal or something medical?

Give the basics a fair trial first: two to three weeks of consistent sleep, regular meals with protein, some daily movement, and a real handle on stress load. If you are still exhausted after that, book blood work. Anemia, low ferritin, thyroid dysfunction, sleep apnea, and vitamin D deficiency are all common in Vancouver and all treatable.

Should I exercise when I am already exhausted?

Usually yes, but not the way you think. Hard intervals when you are already depleted dig the hole deeper. A 30 minute walk, an easy row, or a light strength session leaves most people with more energy than they started with. Save the intensity for the days you actually have it.

Is caffeine making it worse?

Caffeine does not create energy, it borrows it. It also has a half-life of roughly five to six hours, so a 3 pm coffee is still working at 9 pm. Most people who cut off caffeine by early afternoon report better sleep within a week, which is where the real energy comes from.
