Fitness Racing Is Officially a Sport Now. Here Is What That Actually Means

This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.

Common questions

Is fitness racing in the Olympics now?

No. World Triathlon recognised it as a discipline under its umbrella. Olympic inclusion is a separate decision made by the IOC, sport by sport and Games by Games. Recognition makes a discipline eligible to be considered, which is the first step of a long queue.

What is Hyathlon?

Hyathlon is the name World Triathlon gave to the discipline previously described as fitness racing. The name was communicated to national federations in February 2026, after the discipline was approved at the Congress in Wollongong on 18 October 2025.

Does this mean HYROX is now an Olympic sport or a governed event?

No. HYROX is a privately owned race series operating inside the discipline, in the same way Ironman is a private race series inside triathlon. The governing body sits above the brand, and the two are negotiated separately.
