How to Get Your First Kipping Pull-Up the Smart Way

This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.

Common questions

How many strict pull-ups do I need before kipping?

At least 3 clean strict pull-ups with full range of motion. The strict gate is non-negotiable — without baseline pulling strength, the kip is just slamming your shoulders into a position they cannot control.

Should I skip kipping if I only want to be healthy?

No. The kipping pull-up is a legitimate strength-and-coordination skill that adds workout capacity and trains midline. The risk comes from kipping before you have strict, not from kipping itself.

Why does my shoulder hurt after kipping pull-ups?

Almost always because you started kipping before you owned 3 strict pull-ups, or because your kip is more arch than hollow. Build strict first. Drill hollow body second. Pain disappears.
