How to Get Your First Kipping Pull-Up the Smart Way

This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.

Common questions

How many strict pull-ups do I need before kipping?

At least 3 clean strict pull-ups with full range of motion. The strict gate is non-negotiable — without baseline pulling strength, the kip is just slamming your shoulders into a position they cannot control.

Should I skip kipping if I only want to be healthy?

No. The kipping pull-up is a legitimate strength-and-coordination skill that adds workout capacity and trains midline. The risk comes from kipping before you have strict, not from kipping itself.

Why does my shoulder hurt after kipping pull-ups?

Almost always because you started kipping before you owned 3 strict pull-ups, or because your kip is more arch than hollow. Build strict first. Drill hollow body second. Pain disappears.

How often should I train kipping pull-ups?

Two sessions per week — one focused on the kip swing and shape work, one focused on volume. Do not chase pull-up volume in workouts before you own the kip pattern.

Why does my body just swing without going up?

Your hip drive is too late or too soft. The hips have to snap forward at the front of the hollow phase, and the pull has to follow immediately. Hips first, pull second.

Can I learn kipping pull-ups with bands?

Bands are useful for strict pull-ups but mask kip mechanics. Better to drill the kip swing without resistance and earn unassisted strict reps in parallel.

How long does it take to get a kipping pull-up?

For an athlete with 3 strict pull-ups, 4 to 8 weeks of focused practice is typical for a first kipping rep. Connected sets of 5+ usually take another 1 to 3 months.

What are the prerequisites for kipping pull-ups?

3 strict pull-ups with full range, a clean kip swing with visible hollow and arch shapes, a 30-second hollow body hold, and 30-second active hang.

Why does my chin barely clear the bar?

Your hip drive is contributing nothing because it is mistimed. When the hips snap at the right moment, the body floats up and the pull is the easy part. Train the hip pop drill.

Should I learn butterfly pull-ups next?

Yes — but only after you have clean unbroken sets of 10 kipping pull-ups. Butterfly is a rhythm shift, not a strength upgrade. Do not chase it before the foundational kip is rock solid.
