By Degree, Not Kind: Why CrossFit Works for Everyone

This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.

Common questions

Can older adults really do CrossFit?

Yes. CrossFit is designed to scale to any fitness level and any age. The same squat pattern a competitive athlete performs is scaled for a 70-year-old by adjusting depth, load, and speed. CrossFit BC offers a Living Legends program specifically for adults 50 and older.

What does scaling mean in CrossFit?

Scaling means adjusting the workout to deliver the right stimulus for your body. It's not making it easier. It's matching the load, range of motion, reps, or movement variation to your current capacity so you get the same relative intensity as everyone else in the class.

Do I need to be fit before starting CrossFit?

No. CrossFit is designed to take you from wherever you are and build fitness progressively. Every movement scales, every workout adapts, and every coach is trained to meet you at your current level.
