The Couch Stretch Is Not a Magic Wand

This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.

Common questions

Is the couch stretch actually good for you?

Yes, when it is done well. It is a strong way to target the hip flexors and quads. The issue is that most people crank into a big range with a flared ribcage and an arched low back, which leaks the stretch into the spine. Fix the position and it becomes genuinely useful.

Why does the couch stretch hurt my low back?

Usually because the ribcage is flared and the pelvis is dumping forward, so your lumbar spine is providing the range instead of your hip. Stack the ribs over the pelvis, squeeze the trailing glute, and add a small posterior pelvic tilt. The stretch should move from your back to your hip.

How long should I hold the couch stretch?

About 30 to 45 seconds per side with slow breathing is plenty, as long as the position is well organised. Then immediately do a few split squats or air squats so the new range transfers into a movement you can control.
