The Adaptive CrossFit Open: How It Works With WheelWOD

By Dai Manuel (Coach Moose) · Last updated

If you live with a significant, permanent impairment, the Open has a competition built for you. In 2027 the Adaptive Open is run by WheelWOD. Here is how it works and how we can help you get ready.

Part of CrossFit BC's guide to the CrossFit Open.

What the Adaptive Open is

CrossFit's adaptive divisions offer equally challenging workouts, modified for athletes with a significant, permanent impairment. For 2027, the Adaptive Open is run by WheelWOD, an organization that runs adaptive fitness competitions.

There will also be a scaled version of the Adaptive Open workouts, so athletes newer to training have a way in.

Divisions, eligibility and registration

WheelWOD publishes the adaptive divisions, eligibility rules and registration details. Check WheelWOD's site and games.crossfit.com before you register, because those details are set separately from the standard Open.

If you are unsure which division fits you, follow WheelWOD's guidance. Check there for the adaptive workout release dates and score deadlines too.

How our coaches can help

Our coaches scale and adapt movements in every class. For the Open, we can read each workout with you, match every movement to your adaptive standard and plan a pace that works.

Talk to us first. Message a coach on WhatsApp at +1-604-683-2446 and tell us about your training and what you want from the Open. We'll plan from there.

Want to do an adaptive workout at Friday Night Lights? Tell us when you RSVP so we can plan your heat with you.

Training toward February

Use the months before the Open to build consistency, practise your division's movement standards and rehearse a full workout with a judge.

Our how to prepare guide has a runway to February, and our coaches can shape it to your division. The judging guide explains what a judge looks for and how to film a video submission.
