What a Gym Membership in Vancouver Really Costs
The advertised rate is the start of the math, not the end of it.
Every gym publishes a monthly rate. Almost nobody pays exactly that number over a year. The gap between the two comes from three things that are easy to miss when you are comparing tabs in a browser: how often you are billed, what you have to buy before you can train, and what is quietly sold back to you once you have joined.
Start with the billing cycle
This is the single biggest source of surprise. Some gyms bill on a calendar month, 12 times a year. Others bill every 4 weeks, which produces 13 payments in a 52-week year. Same advertised number, roughly 8 percent more money.
Worked example. A rate of $305 every 4 weeks is $3,965 over a year. Billed monthly, the same $305 is $3,660. The difference, $305, is a whole extra payment that never appears on the pricing page. Before you compare anything, convert both options to a year.
Then count what you have to buy before you can train
Most coached gyms require some form of onboarding, and that is a good thing. Learning to squat, hinge, press and cycle a barbell under a coach is what keeps you training for a decade instead of a season. The question is only whether it sits inside the membership or on top of it.
At CrossFit BC, the Foundations 3-Day course is $299 on its own. Inside a Life Performance membership it is included for anyone with under six months of CrossFit experience. Members who already have that mileage take four coaching credits instead, which they can spend on one to one sessions. It is one or the other, not both, and it is in the price either way.
Then the add-ons
Open Gym, body composition testing, nutrition support and one to one coaching are all things you may end up paying for separately. Our Open Gym is included on every 3, 6 and 12 month plan. DEXA plus a nutrition strategy session is $99 for members against the $149 standalone rate. Whatever gym you are looking at, write these down as year-one line items so the totals are comparable.
Now get a number per coached session
Annual total divided by sessions per year is the only figure that tells you what you are buying. Four sessions a week is 208 coached hours a year. Life Performance on the annual commitment is $259 a month, which is $3,108 for the year, or about $14.94 per session with a coach in the room, programming written for the day, and a class to train alongside.
Run your own numbers, including ours, in the membership cost calculator. Enter the rate, pick the billing cycle, set your training frequency, and tick anything you would pay for on top.
What 18 years changes
CrossFit BC opened in 2008, in Yaletown, and has been in Olympic Village since 2019. That length of time shows up in specific places: 12 coaches with published credentials, programming that has been rewritten by results many times over, a schedule that runs CrossFit seven days a week plus 16+ weekly HYROX classes, four of which are 90-minute SIM-ilar sessions, and a members area of tools and resources we built ourselves rather than licensed.
None of that shows up in a monthly rate. It shows up in whether you are still training here in three years.
The short checklist
- Convert every rate to a year-one total before comparing.
- Ask how many payments a year the plan makes.
- Ask whether onboarding is included or extra, and whether it is required.
- Ask whether Open Gym is included.
- Divide by the sessions you will realistically attend.
If you want to see the room before you do any math, three coached classes are on us.
