What physiological changes happen in the first week of a fitness reset?

The primary adaptation is neural, not muscular. Your motor units — the nerve-muscle pairs that produce force — learn to recruit more efficiently, producing rapid strength gains without structural muscle growth. Insulin sensitivity also improves within 3–4 training sessions, and your body begins shifting toward greater fat oxidation at rest.

Why do I feel worse during week two of a training program?

Week two is the inflammation overlap zone. Acute exercise-induced inflammation (IL-6, TNF-alpha) is still elevated while the chronic anti-inflammatory adaptation (IL-10, regulatory T-cells) has not fully established. This produces fatigue, brain fog, and disrupted appetite — all temporary and expected.

Can you build muscle and lose fat at the same time during a 30-day lifestyle reset?

Yes. Body recomposition — simultaneous muscle protein synthesis and fat oxidation — is well-documented in novice and returning trainees with adequate protein intake (1.6–2.2 g/kg/day). The scale may not move, but DEXA scans and waist measurements will show meaningful shifts.
