Why I Require WHOOP for My Coaching Clients
This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.
For most adults serious about training, recovery, and longevity, yes. WHOOP is worth it because it converts vague feelings ("I feel tired") into objective patterns (HRV, resting heart rate, sleep consistency) that you and your coach can act on. If you only train casually and sleep great already, the value is lower. If you are juggling stress, training, and sleep, it pays for itself fast.
WHOOP tracks 24/7 heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), resting heart rate, daily strain, sleep stages, sleep consistency, sleep efficiency, respiratory rate, recovery score, skin temperature, and blood oxygen. The strength is the trend view across weeks, not any single reading.
WHOOP itself does not recover you — your behavior does. But by making sleep, stress, and strain visible, it changes the decisions you make: when to push, when to pull back, when to prioritize sleep. That feedback loop is what improves recovery over time.
