Smaller Promises, Bigger Results: The Quiet Power of Tiny Commitments

This article is part of the CrossFit BC journal, written by the coaching staff who run our classes in Olympic Village, Vancouver. We publish what we teach on the floor: training decisions, recovery, nutrition, and the honest tradeoffs behind them.

Common questions

Why do small habits work better than big goals?

Small habits are repeatable on bad days, not just good ones. They build self-trust through completed promises, which is the actual currency that powers bigger behaviour change later.

How small should a habit be to start?

Small enough to feel almost embarrassing – like two squats, one glass of water, or a five-minute walk. If it requires motivation to do, it''s still too big.

How long does it take for a habit to stick?

Anywhere from 18 to 250+ days depending on the habit. Track one tiny habit daily for 30 days, then re-evaluate. Most people see real identity shifts around 8 to 12 weeks.

What if I miss a day?

Miss one, never miss two. Do the smallest possible version the next day to keep the streak of self-trust intact.

How does this connect to nutrition or training?

Same rule. Pick one tiny promise – "protein at breakfast," "two classes a week" – and keep it religiously before adding anything else.
