1. When did you start coaching at CrossFit BC?
September 2010—oh my god, I’ve been getting up at 5 am and driving from Tsawwassen to coach the 6 am class for over 6 years! I must be crazy!

2. Why did you choose CrossFit?
My body is designed for the apocalypse. I put on weight pretty easily so I’ve always had to exercise to keep it off. I kept trying different workouts at globo gyms, running, swimming, cycling, but always got bored and couldn’t maintain the programs. A friend of mine joined the first CrossFit gym in Vancouver, CrossFit Vancouver, and said I should try it. I did one class and was absolutely hooked. That was November 2005. I haven’t gone one week since then without doing a class.

3. What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Excellent gains in strength and fitness. I am by far way stronger, faster and fitter than I was in my twenties and early thirties before CrossFit.

4. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?
Most people say just try it and that is true. There is no more supportive place to start an exercise regimen than a class at CrossFit BC. So I won’t say that. My advice would be to focus on technique and virtuosity of movement. Don’t cheat. In a workout, excellent and efficient technique will get you way farther and faster than brute strength. Why do more work than you have to?

5. What is your favourite CrossFit exercise?
That’s a tough one, it has changed over the years. I like bar muscle-ups when I can get them. I actually kind of like burpees. I know what I hate…sumo deadlift high pulls…I just hate them.

6. What is your favourite activity outside of CrossFit?
Spending time with my wife and two teenagers.

7. What is your proudest accomplishment at CrossFit?
That’s easy. Rider (Chris Ericksen) and I were teammates at a big competition, the Taranis Winter Challenge in 2011. We were up against these two big, young studs from the home gym in this heavy thruster, kettle bell workout in the quarter finals and us two old guys crushed them.

8. Have you made any changes to your diet?
I find it difficult to really be a clean eater because I love food and I have a family that also has to be included in meal planning that wouldn’t be too keen on a paleo diet J. That being said, I try and aim for a rough Zone Diet of 40,30,30.

9. Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
I sell homes for a living. I only coach CrossFit because I love it and my athletes.

10. What/who inspires you the most?
Before I answer I want it known that I am not sucking up to the boss. KT (Troy Straith) inspires me every day. Nobody works as hard as he does day in and day out. To continually qualify for the CrossFit Games takes incredible time and effort. He never dogs a workout or cheats a rep. His mental toughness is second to none. He inspires me to try and work as hard as he does so I can be like him when I grow up.
