1. When did you join CrossFit BC?
I first joined in 2013, but a car accident knocked me out of the game for almost a year.
I rejoined in late 2014.

2. Why did you choose CrossFit?
Before I started CrossFit, I had the workout discipline of a sloth.
I wasn’t involved in sports growing up so I didn’t know my way around a gym.
CrossFit allowed me to to get comfortable with working out and Olympic weightlifting with the coaching I needed. Now I wonder why I didn’t start sooner!

3. What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
I may occasionally Car2Go the 450m from my house to the Skytrain… but CrossFit has really changed my life. The biggest change I’ve noticed is mental. I’ve struggled a lot with body image and CrossFit has helped me be happier with my body. My new motto is “My body does what I demand of it”. That motto has helped me be happy with I can accomplish and not define myself by what I see in the mirror.

I’ve also blown the seat seams out on my two nicest suits…

4. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?

There will never be a perfect time to start. Just jump in and get started!
You’ll likely be surprised how quickly you’ll adapt and what you’re already able to accomplish.
Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help. No one will judge you if you need extra help with a movement.

5. What is your favourite CrossFit exercise?
Thrusters and “Bring Sally Up” Squat Version *Cue the angry villagers with pitchforks*

6. What is your favourite activity outside of CrossFit?

Doing my first strict pull-up. I had never been able to one all of my life

8. Have you made any changes to your diet?
I now do meal prep for the week and focus on clean-eating.
It makes me feel less guilty when I’m unleashed in Theirry or Rain or Shine.

Not that I was a big drinker, but I have pretty much stopped drinking save for special occasions. Scotiabank actually stopped my credit card for suspected fraud the last time I went to the BCL.

9. Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
I speak Mandarin and majored in Asian Language and Culture. I made a killing in commissions when I worked for Bell in Richmond Centre. I would eavesdrop on our Chinese customers since they would discuss their objections and assumed I couldn’t understand them. Lo and behold I would magically have the perfect solution for them. Only got caught once.

10. What/who inspires you the most?
The Masters Athletes. Their skill, athleticism, and commitment demonstrates that fitness isn’t just a young man’s game.
