1. When did you join CrossFit BC?
I joined in June 2016. I’d say something to the effect of, “it feels like yesterday,” except for the fact it feels like I’ve known some people for a lifetime.

2. Why did you choose CrossFit?
I actually chose CrossFit because I wanted a second chance at Phys Ed class: I wasn’t that strong in P.E., which was sometimes embarrassing. But I’ve continued the sport because it helps me to develop both mental discipline and physical strength.

3. What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Sometimes I notice that I breathe deeper. You learn to calm your breathing during an endurance WOD (Workout of the Day), so I suppose that transferred to daily life. With CFBC’s precise programming, I’ve also seen large improvements in the weight I can throw around. Along with this, improved technique and more confidence in the movements.

4. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?
You might’ve heard the saying, “You don’t need to get fit before you start CrossFit.” It’s true. Don’t worry if you need to make modifications; you won’t be the only one (and if you are, I’ll do the WOD with you – then there’ll be two of us).

5. What is your favourite CrossFit exercise?
Either pistol (one-legged) squats or overhead squats. But maybe not combined.

6. What is your favourite activity outside of CrossFit?
Hiking, reading, and spending time with friends and family.

7. What is your proudest accomplishment at CrossFit?
Sorry to talk about pistols again, but to me, they signify overcome obstacles. A while back, I sustained minor nerve damage (not doing CrossFit — that’s a stereotype). It was as if I’d woken up in a clunky costume that wouldn’t come off. But, with help, I used the six month recovery to piece together my pistols. CrossFit helped me regain my sense of self, and I got those squats out of it!

8. Have you made any changes to your diet?
Yes, within reason: I’m conscious of macros when I pack my meals in the morning, but I’ll still have cookies when I want to. Perhaps my next goal will be to eat as clean as my little sister.

9. Is there something that people would be surprised to know about you?
While people know I’ve gotten more comfortable with split jerks, one fear I’ve yet to face is interacting with mascots. By which I mean people dressed in oversized, fuzzy, often anthropomorphic costumes.

10. What/who inspires you the most?
First and foremost, the athletes and coaches at CFBC: we have a dedicated and compassionate family here, and I feel really lucky to train with everyone. I admire those who work hard in their daily lives and during WODs, and also stay behind to practice a movement or cheer on their friends. Our community is pretty inspiring.
And there’s my best friend, Emily: growing up together (since Kindergarten!), she was my model of an athlete. Guess we’re both “athletes” now, Em!
